Details

Before 1939 Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, wanted to start a cultural event in France to rival the Venice International Film Festival. More than a year after the end of the war in 1946, the first edition of the International Film Festival in Cannes finally took place.

71st edition 8 - 19 may 2018

The Festival de Cannes has been celebrating cinema for more than 70 years. Over the years, the Association Française du Festival International du Film has been able to change whilst keeping the essence of the Festival: a passion for cinema, the discovery of new talent and the enthusiasm of festival goers and professionals from the whole world who come to contribute to the making and distribution of films.

The 71st Festival de Cannes will take place from Tuesday, 8th May to Saturday, 19th May 2018. It will start one day earlier than in previous years, but will run for exactly the same length of time.

The opening will therefore take place on the evening of Tuesday, 8th May and the awards ceremony will be on Saturday, 19th May.

"Following 2017’s anniversary edition, the Festival is beginning a new period in its history," says Festival President Pierre Lescure. "We intend to renew the principles of our organisation as much as possible, while continuing to question the cinema of our age and to be present through its upheavals."

This new schedule will allow us to rebalance the two weeks of the event and to bring new energy to the proceedings.

What is more, starting on a Tuesday will allow us to hold an additional gala evening before the Festival weekend and to organise previews of the opening film throughout France.

Finally, bringing forward the announcement of awards by one day, to Saturday evening, will increase its prestige, while at the same time giving the closing film better exposure.

Cate Blanchett, Jury President of the Festival de Cannes 2018
Australian actor Cate Blanchett is to be President of the Jury of the Festival de Cannes, the 71st edition of which will be taking place in May 2018.

Edouard Baer, Master of Ceremonies at the 71st Festival de Cannes.

The poster for the Festival de Cannes 2018…

… features a woman and a man engaged in a passionate kiss.

The poster of the 71st Festival de Cannes, taken from Jean-Luc Godard’s Pierrot le fou (1965), is inspired by the work of Georges Pierre (1927-2003). This immense still photographer immortalised the shooting of over a hundred films in a 30-year career that began in 1960 with Jacques Rivette, Alain Resnais and Louis Malle. He then worked in partnership with Robert Enrico, Yves Robert, Claude Sautet, Bertrand Tavernier, Andrzej Żuławski, Andrzej Wajda, and of course Jean-Luc Godard.
Committed to achieving recognition for stills photographers as artists in their own right, Georges Pierre founded the Association des Photographes de Films, tasked with defending the material and moral interests of cinema photographers.

The poster itself is the work of graphic designer Flore Maquin. Inspired by pop culture, this 27-year-old illustrator blends drawing, painting and digital art in a vibrant and colourful world. A passionate film buff, she works with Universal Pictures, Paramount Channel, Europacorp, Wild Side, and Arte, revisiting or creating alternatives for film posters (www.flore-maquin.com).

In 2002, it was Star Wars – Episode II – Attack of the Clones and in 2005, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. In 2018, what is one of the greatest legends in the history of cinema returns to the red carpet at the next Festival de Cannes.

Presented Out of Competition, the latest film of the Star Wars galaxy by Ron Howard brings together Han Solo, his faithful Chewbacca, the crooked Lando Calrissian, the Millenium Falcon and of course the droids...
